Week beginning Monday January 9th

WOW 3 snow days. That put us a little behind. Recall last week we were working on your Food Web presentation. The scoring system is on the assignments page HERE.
Have you used ALL the videos in the ecosystems CANVAS module in order to help you annotate your slides? Make sure you've been through them. Once you have as many points as you want for your grade, save it and get ready to send and show me.

Thursday 12th.
I can construct food webs and describe why there is a different population size in each trophic level.

After you have read the bit above, your next tasks involve the paper Ecosystem Q&A and the text book page 385-6. These are different tasks. The paper task has questions you are to type out the answers to in full in WORD.

The second involves describing the terms biotic and abiotic in terms of ecosystems, and describing the different factors in each case. Put them on a Powerpoint slide show.

Friday 13th (eek!).
I can describe the difference between an ecosystem, a habitat and a biome (by yome)
Check out the map on THIS webpage. Click on and off the different layers to see where the various biomes of the world are located. Feel free to explore the site.

Then check out the names of the 5 major biomes on THIS page.

TO get yourself ready for the work next week, create a BIOMES PowerPoint and use one slide for each type of Biome. Put at least one picture showing the environment (maybe full slide), and a picture for at least one plant and one animal that live in that environment. Don't forget to name them. SAVE IT TO YOUR ONE DRIVE.

Week beginning Wednesday January 4th

HAPPY NEW YEAR :)

Wednesday 4th.
I can describe the expectations of Kiser middle school.

Thursday 5th.
I can show the difference between food chains and food webs.
Hopefully you have improved upon my basic food chain that I gave you. You should have all the key words, some repeated, and you will have had to include at least two new pictures of your own.

When you added those new creatures, the food chain would have turned into a food WEB. How is a food web different to a food chain? What do both types of diagram have in common (what do they both show)?

Today we are going to make a food web from scratch. You will need to start off by researching the kind of creatures you want in your web. See some food web examples here, here, here and here.

See a couple of other food CHAINS here and here.

Remember the videos in the CANVAS module.

Friday 6th.
I can illustrate how populations vary through a food cheb and explain the reason why.
Looking at our example food chain, do you think there will be more hawks or more rabbits in a particular area? More rabbits or more blades of grass? Why are the numbers different? Does ALL of the energy get transferred to the consumer? Today's focus is on answering these questions. You will end up with 3 completed slides in your PowerPoint.
[Make sure you have watched the 4th video in the latest CANVAS module]
There is much information here that you can use to add summaries to each of your slides.

Week beginning Monday December 19th
Three days to go before the break. You need to make sure you stay on task these 3 days. You will still have grades to be entered!!

Monday 19th.
I can recall facts from previous topics in Science from this quarter.
Day 5 quiz today AND there is a lot of other stuff to get through.
Core 3&4 we shall go over Day 4 first as you did it during absorption on Friday, so please have that ready. Today's class will also use Kahoot and Quizizz so you will need those sites ready for codes on your laptop.
Hopefully you also have the crossword puzzle sheets you took for absorption, get those out too please.

Tuesday 20th.
I can construct a simple food chain from information and illustrate the types of creatures within it.
Our next topic involves looking into where the energy that is derived from photosynthesis gets directed in an ecosystem. Different habitats have different producers, consumers and decomposers, different carnivores, omnivores and herbivores, and different predators looking for prey.

To start today, make a list of each of these bold words on a new page in your notebook and write a simple definition next to each one after looking them up. Make sure the definition is relevant to plants/animals/ecosystems.

Wednesday 21st. MERRY CHRISTMAS :)
I can construct a simple food chain from information and illustrate the types of creatures within it.
Did you complete the words from yesterday? You will need THIS file which you are going to alter, add to and improve on in the first half of class today. There are 3 videos in CANVAS that will help you with this information. Look inside the MODULE called Ecosystems.

LINK to the rearranged incentives groups.
It may alter slightly during the morning.
It couldn't be helped, sorry.

Week beginning Monday December 12th
We are back on the Big Idea for our warm ups. Monday is day 1, so there will be a quiz on day 5 (Friday). Don't forget Thursday is the UNCG trip before that you have the next plants test on Wednesday.

Monday 12th.
I can illustrate the concept of germination and place it in the life cycle of a plant.
We will be starting with the Big Idea day 1. This will be the last series before the break. The day 5 quiz will be Tuesday NEXT WEEK.

Tuesday 13th.
I can describe the carbon cycle exchanging carbon between plants and animals.
Big Idea day 2. Get your plant folder out straight away please. We are going to place more items inside it. If you think you're going to run out of space, don't worry we are going to make more room.

PLEASE DON'T PUT coloring pencils or the glue acorns in the trash along with your bits of paper, etc. That is lazy and shows a lack of gratitude on your part. Put items back where you got them.

ALSO - could the person who took my nice V5 pens out of my pencil case on my desk please give them back to me!! :(

Wednesday 14th.
I can do my best on the test today by eliminating all rubbish answer choices.
Big Idea 3 SHALL be the warm up today. Once reviewed, you will all be given the school-net code together for the test. There is a vocabulary exercise to complete once you have done the test.

Thursday 15th.
UNCG.
Big Idea postponed.

Week beginning Monday December 5th

This week we are back on the Big Idea for our warm ups. Monday is day 1, so there will be a quiz on day 5 (Friday).
Monday 5th.
I can research and summarize why there are leaves of different size and shape.
Manilla folder will be used for LEAF graphic organizer. Your best leaf rubbing from last Friday will be stuck to the cover. I will explain further before you do this. The focus for today's class is the reason all the leaves in the world are not all the same shape, if all the leaves in the world do the same job. We will start with a discussion about this.

Tuesday 6th.
I can describe the layers of the leaf between the two cuticle layers and label a diagram describing parts and function.
We will start with the Big Idea and move onto how the internal layers of the leaf facilitate photosynthesis. Look up the word facilitate.
You will need the website given to you last Friday.

Wednesday 7th.
I can describe the process of respiration and explain how it is the opposite of photosynthesis.
The first two activities today will be the Big Idea sheet 3 and the study of THIS website. Do one while you wait for the other. You will also need Mr.Barker's CANVAS area for plants, but not straight away.

Ultimately you will start to draft out the summary about RESPIRATION that will go into your organizer.

Thursday 8th.
I can compare the processes of evaporation and transpiration and describe transpiration as the third plant process.
Research and discuss the definition of the two key words above. How many uses/applications of evaporation can you find? Make a list with your group/partner.
Get your leaf folder at the ready, and your info-storage location.

Friday 9th.
I can illustrate and summarize each of the major plant processes.
After the big Idea quiz we will be going to the computer room but I first have to remind you of the reason we are going. There will be a demonstration so watch carefully. You will also find the plants section of "Science 6" useful.

Structure changed here, it used to be individual days.

Friday December 2nd

Please study THIS site and examine the structure of a leaf.

Thursday December 1st

Please study the parts of the plant PowerPoint in Science6 before the test.
You will do a quick comprehension activity to warm your brain up which I will pass out shortly.

You will need SchoolNet open and I shall tell you what the code is during the classtime.

Wednesday November 30th - please read then LISTEN carefully to me.
For your activity during the class, you will need the labelled flower sheet to color, AND the
12 square grid that you will make a set of flashcards about the 12 parts on the picture.

If you notice on the calendar, your first plants test is tomorrow. It will be on all the really easy plant stuff we have done so far. It's only short so it won't take long.

ALSO...You should have saved, somewhere, recent PowerPoint pieces of work. Most recently, the Pollinators and the Edible Plants (see Friday below). It needs to be saved as a picture so go to the How To.. in the menu above and watch the movie in the PowerPoint. Please write the filename as shown - ScienceX Title Name - where X is your core number when you have Science.

We will be trying that a few times today so that we get it right.

Tuesday November 29th

Out of 120 students only 54 returned yesterday's pollen vs nectar questions.
That is 54 people that score 100, and 66 that score zero for participation!!
Today I want you to start by going to Mr. Barker's CANVAS area and click MODULES down the side.
There are two videos you will be able to watch.
FIRST is Vegetation Transformation.
SECOND is Photosynthesis.
Please use your headphones/earbuds if you have them.
Once you have watched BOTH videos, you will need to get a copy of the main activity from me.

Monday November 28th

Read the website located HERE.
Then answer the questions in the Google Form HERE.
You may keep the page open to help.
You have 15 minutes to complete this task.
Additional (shorter) information is HERE.

Tuesday November 22nd

Did you complete your photosynthesis picture?
Did you get your bonus grade?

Start today with the word scramble - hand it to me as soon as you're done.
Collect the How I See It concept activity once your picture is complete.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING :)

Monday November 21st
Please study page 430-431 in text book.
Today you will be using that picture in the book. I will be asking you questions.
Also go check out the 6L1 section of Science 6 HERE.

Friday November 18th

Apparently I typed too much for Thursday yesterday :( so let's try and rectify that.

Complete the activity described in the document here .

After you've completed that you will need THIS PowerPoint slide and THIS webpage.
Then click here for what to do with them.

Thursday November 17th

Wow where did those days go? Well you had a test on Tuesday and then started the plant picture labels with the messy glue on Wednesday. A whole session without laptops and you all coped really well.

Today some of us will need to finish that plant pic - so keep the laptop AWAY from the glue. Once you have completed that mission and cleared up, there are two things I need you to do, one is a little more complicated than the other. You can do them in any order.

A: Go to Schoolnet and put the code _-_-_-_- into the box. This is a really easy "click on the part of the plant" quiz to get a nice grade boost. You can use your plant diagram to help.

B: Go to Canvas where you will hopefully have a new module / assignment called plant pic. You may need assistance from peers or your teacher, but I want you to send me a pic of your plant picture using the camera on your laptop (or your neighbor's). It might not let you take the picture live (needs access to your camera) but you can take the picture and upload it. Remember to smile :)
If you complete all of this that is an AWESOME job. What to do after that will follow. Ask me when ready.

Monday November 14th

Tomorrow is your Earth in the Universe test on Schoolnet. Today is a review day. You will need to study review sheets A,B and C. We will go over sheet A together. There will be a short set of questions associated with each sheet. Each set/sheet gets you one grade.

Make sure also you complete any outstanding assignments. Check the assignments page.

Thursday November 10th

Space technology has produced many new and fantastic products and materials for us to use every day. Do you know what the original purpose of that material was when it was invented? Today you will use Study Island to look into a few of those materials, so make sure you can log into your account. I would be DavidBarker@kiser for my username so change yours accordingly. Your password was changed on first log on and most people have tiger or tiger1 or tiger6 or KMStiger6, OR they chose their own.

Wednesday November 9th

Yesterday was a teacher workday so we are thinking back to Monday.
There are items written on the whiteboard this morning.
Don't forget the deadline for the Space Exploration PowerPoint is Friday.
For the rocket videos go HERE and click the Discovery Education link.

Monday November 7th

After the Big idea Day 5 quiz sheet you will be looking at 2 videos on Discovery Education and then making a rocket stage summary in your notebooks. I will give you a rocket to stick into your books. Please start the class by studying pages 261-263 in our text books.

You will need the Kiser website open, but you already did that to get here of course,

Friday November 4th

Check your answers for Big Idea 1-4 on the projector screen as each gets put up.
While you wait, look at the archive (scroll down and find the word) on the website called Astronomy Pictures Of The Day from NASA. Click HERE to see it.

Thursday November 3rd

I was out of school today. Hopefully you completed the revision squares worksheet.

Wednesday November 2nd

REMEMBER READ ALL THIS TEXT BEFORE CLICKING ANYTHING.
You should have started your plan in your notebook yesterday, maybe even finished it.
You each need a plan written, even if you are working together.
Today, after the Big Idea, you will start creating the time-line.
I will clarify the option choices for you.

Tuesday November 1st

REMEMBER READ ALL THIS TEXT BEFORE CLICKING ANYTHING.
We are now starting to look at how we explore the solar system.
Start by viewing the SeaSky website HERE.
I shall be stopping you shortly for the Big Idea.
Today you will be making a timeline based off this website. You might want to look up various timelines while we get started.

Friday October 28th

Start off with the Big Idea day 3 & 4. You will have the day 5 (QUIZ) on Tuesday next week.

Please make sure you have completed the 5 door foldable "Life on Earth" and the black paper Moon phases 8-segment foldable next to it. I need to tell you what to write under neath each picture so get ready to listen up.

You will also be using SchoolNet today for your unit tests. Remember, NCEdCloud is the first place you go to. Of course you used that to get to here :) .

Good Luck on the PAWS draw, I hope you are a winner.

Thursday October 27th

Today's first activity will be a Big Idea Day 1 AND 2.
Then we will do a review activity linking the phases of the Moon to eclipses and spring tides. It will involve your notebook again. Remember it is in the NEW book box.

Friday we will have the solar system test (on schoolnet). It will include the solar system and some questions from the Earth-Sun-Moon test as well as questions from previous topics (Earth structure, etc.). This is because your end of year exam will have questions from EVERY topic on there, not just the most recent one.

Wednesday October 26th.

Today is Math testing day, so more short classes.
We will be using THIS page again and your class notebook from the boxes.
I will show you how to construct a 5-door foldable based on the 5 sections on the webpage.
You will need the next clean right hand side page.
Get your notebook out and turn to that page.

While you might need to wait for others to catch up, check THIS out.

Tuesday October 25th

Open THIS page and read the 5 factors that allowed life to thrive on Earth. Make any short notes you care too.

Click this link. It will take you to a posting board. The question is written at the top and you can click the plus sign to add your comment with your name at the top. Your post will answer the question, without copying and pasting from my page on the link above.

Fill in your BIG IDEA sheet in the first 20 minutes.
